My 02 has a little over 74,000 miles and due up for an oil change in a few hundred miles. Figured it's a good time to change everything out.

Is this all of them? Also, any suggestions on fluid brand and types plus amounts needed would be great.

Motor Oil (prev owner used 5/30)
Coolant
Transmission
Differential

TIA

4x4 transfer case? Depends what you have as to what fluid. My 03 takes the blue dealer only fluid and was a breeze to change.

Power steering fluid? I'm changing mine, but I'm just sucking out the old stuff, putting in new stuff. I read to do that about 3 times and you would be fine.

Brake fluid? I've only recently heard about doing this by sucking out the old fluid in the reservoir, fill with new, then bleed each wheel until it runs clear.

:help: can you share the readings on the power steering and brakes?

Thanks!!! :rockit:

It's a 2WD.

Will add to the list. Still debating about a brake upgrade so I may do it then.

Man, I have no idea where I read about it. It was probably on this board. I'm lucky to remember where I live, let alone where I read something!!

The best way to truly flush the power steering is to disconnect the return line from the pump to the hydroboost, right at the top of the hyrdoboost behind the brake master cylinder. Have a rag below it to catch excess fluid, and it helps to use a pair of channel locks on the clamp. Connect a piece of 3/8 hose about 6-8 feet long where that line disconnected and hang it over the fender into a drain pan. Once you have that there, crank the truck and begin to pump the brakes. Pump them until you hear the pump just barely begin to whine and turn the truck off. At this point pore fresh fluid in the power steering reservoir until full. Repeat this until you begin to see the clear fluid draining into the pan. Once that happens, pump a little more and fill JUST TO THE FULL MARK on the dip stick. Most of the time you will want to fill that PS on up to the top, don't, the level should be about 2 inches lower than the top. At any rate, fill it half way and begin to test with the cap to get the right level. Then disconnect the drain line and reconnect the return line. By doing this you are actually flushing the system with fresh fluid in real time.

As for the brakes, yes, sucking the old out, refilling and then bleeding each line one at a time is IMO the best way.

Awesome writeup!

Found lots of additional info to all my questions searching and in the complete Tech section.

This site is so great!! :Handshake:

DONOT make the Ps pump wine, have a helper running the wheel n key. If that pump is whining its scoring bearings..

I just flushed mine 2 days ago....
your helper has to pum the brakes to pump fluid out, it does not just flow out like the trans flush...
As your watching fluid, pump it out until you see the internal valve body inside the resvoiur, when you see it SHUT OFF engine. fill it with fresh fluid. repeat this until you get clear fluid coming out of the return.. aka the hose routed to your bucket.

It took me 3 quarts to flush mine from Black fluid to Very Light tea colored fluid. one more quart wouldhave taken it to clear, but I only bought 3.

Be shure to have your helper turn the wheel left and right before pumping the brakes, to get the fluid to flush the steering beer thing...
Tip here, roll vehical forward or back before each time you do the steering turn. or you will flat spot your tires..
when i did mine I had my helper turn from left to right 6 times then pump brakes 6-7 times, cut engine, refill, move vehical a few inchs,, and repeat procedure...
