Have an 04 Z71 with 121k miles. Trans fluid done by dealership at 65k. Driving home from work today and it starts slipping in OD. Never had slipped before but was slipping bad if trying to accelerate around 65. Ended up putting it in 3rd for ride home. By time I got home (20 miles) 3rd was acting up too and 2nd was starting too. Watched tranny temp gauge and it got up to maybe 220. Got home and popped hook to check fluid and noticed my air filter on intake had broken off at the flange and was laying in engine compartment, leaving MAF wide open. Thought maybe this created issue (I know MAF can make things act up)so got new filter and tried it but no. Will slip in any gear now, mainly above 2500 rpms. Got home after putting filter on and fluid smelled bad/burnt. Think it's tranny? Do they typically lose all gears that fast? Or maybe MAF got dirty or ruined and is screwing with tranny?

Your tranny is toast. Certainly an air filter breaking off is serious, depending on how long this went on, the damage to the engine will be evident over time (worn rings-silicon is fairly abrasive). But, the tranny issues are not related. After replacing the tranny and torque convertor, do not wait 60 K miles to replace fluid. Depending on the use, 40,000 is more suitable. The clutch friction material inside the tranny contaminates the fluid and is not removed by the internal filter. Good luck

It's also widely theorized to not change tranny fluid unless you absolutely have to. Many horror stories of bad trannys after fluid change

Owner manuals all have both normal and severe service intervals for transmission service. I do not recall any auto manufacturer recommending not servicing trannies.

Yes it is very sudden when the trans goes. My 2006 Denali did the exact same thing. Was fine the whole time, drove down the mountain one day, drove it back up, watched my trans gauge get super hot, got home and parked and that was it. Wouldn't go into reverse, and slipped in all gears. Sounds like a rebuild is in order. Unfortunately our generation transmission was not built very well. However, once it's rebuilt it'll be bulletproof if you have a good rebuilder who knows what they're doing.
