My old Hoe has 285,000 miles on it. I have taken great care of it but lately, its developed a whine and its getting louder. I believe its coming from the out put of the transfer case/transmission or maybe the Rear end. When the drive train is under a load or I'm accelerating it goes away. When I am coasting, the whine starts up. It almost has a bounciness too it. I am capable of doing the repairs myself but wanted to see if anyone could get me in the right direction. Could it be a bearing on the output shaft of the transfer case/Trans or on the pinion of the differential? Anyone had this problem before?

You might have better luck finding an answer to your question if you post in the correct year forum, just saying.

Might be the rear end. Symptoms sound exactly like mine. I replaced the outer bearings / seals and it still did it. Mine must have been a bearing somewhere else, I ended up putting a rebuilt used rear end in it. Solved the problem.

i had the same problem in my truck at the end of a snowy winter in washington
it was because the transfer case is not disengaging the 4 hi light would go out but t case never disengaged i had to stop pull of the highway put it back in 4 hi drive down a side road like 25 or so and put it back in 2wd untill it heard it disengage
they told me what caused it is turning the vehicle off when it was still in 4 hi

That is the first thing I suspected. It has a similar sound of being in 4wd.
So you just had to engage and disengage ( with the buttons on the dash) traveling at 25mph until you heard it stop/disengage ?
