Awesome, thank you.

I'm leaning towards a used replacement differential now given the cost of tools and parts.

Press $200
Beam Type torque wrench $100+
Yoke Holder $30
Bearing Separator $30
Mag Base Dial Indicator $100+
Rebuild Kit $330
Just Pinion Bearings $ not sure.
Rear Axel Bearings and Seals $ not sure
Slide Hammer $100

Called around and have two used diff options.

$875 used 5yr. war. ($75/hr. payout to replace within 5 yrs.)
$550 used 90 day war.

New would be about
$1600 new 3yr./60,000km

Smart. Axles can get expensive. If they're setup well and maintained they can last forever. They're hard though.

I bought the tools and still lacked the confidence to setup my own gears (that first time). It's hard. It also gets more expensive than you expect. I didn't see you list axle bearings and seals either. Fluids add a bit to cost. If you buy a used axle you get extra brake parts and an extra yoke to throw in your parts pile.

No I didn't include axel bearings and seal and yes I would do them as well. I will update above list ^^ :rockit:
Interesting perspective. I'd love to do it, but its getting expensive as we've said. I may just swap diffs only?

I wasn't planning on replacing the whole axel...........:hmmm2: I've read about just swapping the axel, just not in detail. What have your experiences been like ? Replace whole axel or just diff?

Thank you goodinblack and mattluttrell

You just need the right tools, a good magnetic base for the dial indicator to check the backlash. A press for the bearings, a highly accurate Tq wrench.

Thanks you livingez :)

And to think, I was going to head to wreckers for an axel.

Proper diagnostics is essential. Duhhh.

I keep going through poor quality Front Wheel Bearing Assemblies.

Have you ruled out the u-joints? I`ve had bad joints that creaked or made a ticking noise and also had some squealers.

If that`s not the problem i`d just pull the diff cover and take a look and see what you find. Hopefully your locker didn`t break.

So I thought I had ruled out the u-Joints. However! I preformed a "less than satisfactory inspection. I did not really remove ALL driveline torque from driveshaft.

I proceded to lift truck and work on the rear diff inspection.

When I did that I had completely lifted the truck with tires of ground and truck in Neutral. I then observed really crapping condition "rear-rear" U-Joint.
