Ok, this is driving me crazy. When I come to a complete stop I SOMETIMES get a clunking sound that also sounds like a metal clanking. I really doubt it is the differential. I recently put some crappy U bolts on from autozone that are not a snug fit around the leaf packs, they are on tight as hell though. I noticed that the right side spring perch centering hole for the centering pin is a bit oblong. So in my explorations I also noticed the bottom leaf had slid a bit or twisted so I knocked it back into place and as I was doing that I banged the lef pack from the bottom and the noise I heard slightly resembled the noise I hear.

Are my springs chattering as I stop? Are theytwisting due due the ****** fit of the U bolts? I am with out a doubt replacing the U bolts. Any other ideas?

mine makes a little noise when it settles back after a stop, was told it was the slip yoke needing greased and that it had a screwed up bolt on it... needless to say i have yet to screw with it.

I have a noise coming form the rear end also. but its more of a bang like something isnt mounted right. it happens when I'm at a complete stop and when I go to take off it makes the noise. I havent been able to figure out what it is yet. :(

gears are goos and so is tranny. I am 99% sure it is the ****** U bolts. I crawled under and on that was just tight was a little loose, crappy chinese bolts. I snugged it up and so far no noise. I am assuming it is the rear shifting a tiny bit when I stop. New bolts will be on tomorrow. Drive it for a few days to double check and hopefully end this chapter. Going in for a little paint work next

Backlash is the amount of play between the ring and pinion gears in the differential. It is probably the worst thing to try to adjust, other than... Nope, it is the worst thing to adjust.

Bow Tie- my K5 did this, especially when starting/stopping. It would clunk, and settle about an inch when I came to a stop. It ended up being my shackle bushings, after replacing everything else on that stupid thing. Take a crow bar, and start pushing/pulling on them, and see if there's excess play in them. If you still have a gov-lock differential, absolutely pull the cover off, and inspect your pinion gears for wear, and look at the magnet on the inside of the diff cover for excess shavings, or gear chunks.

My rear end started making a clunk every time we started/stopped/turned and then the rear end went, blowing chunks of the pinion gears down the road behind me last month. Funsies!!!!

Most of these trucks do this. I've been told that is the slipyoke in the trans. The remedy they say is to remove the driveshaft and grease the yoke that slips in the transmission. The trans fluid is supposed to lubricate this but . . . . I' personally have not tried this remedy but, my truck does make that noise when I come to a complete stop.
