I bought some II Crave wheels, these http://www.2cravealloys.com/wheel_4c-1.htm, for my 07 Tahoe and was going to have them powdercoated matte black. When I took them in they said they could not do it because the middle piece that is plastic will melt (which I could paint later) and also the little rivets around the inner edge are actually plastic and will melt and pop out leaving little holes. It looks like my options are to go through with it and have little holes all around the inner rim or return the rims with some hefty shipping and restocking fees. Any thoughts or ideas? Are most of these rivets plastic or only on cheaper wheels?

Hmmm that is a bind. What size are they? I'm not a big fan of chrome but look pretty good. Rivets are not usually plastic and that sounds like the bigger problem. You could go ahead with the PC and paint the center cap and let the rivets pop out or remove them before hand. They wont serve much purpose once the whole wheel is matte black. Or just return them...there's nothing worse then being dissapointed with such a big purchase and something that changes the entire look of your ride. Unless of course you can find anyone that will paint them.

I think he pretty much summed it up. What do you think of having wheels without the rivets? Obviously you liked them there or you wouldn't have purchased the wheels to begin with. You did however bring up another option. What about sand blasting the wheels to remove the chrome and having the wheels just repainted? It's not like the wheels will receive that much wear and tear and you could always touch them up if you really needed to. Just an idea, but I say if you aren't settled on either PC'ing the wheels and having them without the rivets or painting them then the only option is to return them. No one likes having something they aren't completely satisfied with.

It depends on what you want to end up doing. All the plastics have to be removed including rivits. I get replacement plastic rivits at .50 each. Pretty steep, but it's the only place i can find so far.

I had the identical problem. I have 24" Dropstar DS03's and wanted to get just the inside "spokes" powdercoated black and leave the lip, rivets and centercap chrome. My rims have a similar plastic center cap so instead of powdercoating they just painted it to match. They also just nremove the rivets and put in new ones after. I had problems with my powdercoating. After 3 months the coating started pealing so I had to take them back. Apparently it had something to do with the type of chrome process used on my rims. My rims werent cheap either they were 4 grand without tires. The shop I took them too is legit and all they do is customize rims so I know they prepped them good. This has happened to a few friends of mine with different rims at different shops. If your shop told you that they couldnt do yours because of the plastic they dont sound to experienced to me. Yeah they are right they it will melt when they nake the rims but they should be able to paint all that stuff seperately after. Just make sure they have a good warranty policy in case something happens. Just my 2 cents.
