I would see about cutting it off, being (what I believe) it's the problem giving the p3400 code. I've seen people drive around with a collapsed lifter. Not condoning the activity as anything of that nature is causing damage, but I have seen it done.
I believe you'd be ok with just deactivating the DOD for now. PLEASE use sound judgment when making that decision. Don't consider it the "fix all" either. You have to remember the whole DOD is a system that works in conjunction with other parts including 4 special lifters that help in the system.
These trucks really don't have a lot of problems, most "issues" tend to rest on the care of the previous owner(s). DOD is almost useless from day one.
