This might be a lenghty post, but please stay with me. I have a steering issue that is drving me nuts!!!!!
About a month ago I bought a 2001 Yukon XL1500 4x4. When I bought it, it had something weird going on with the steering. From there I took it to the Chevy dealership. I put brand new tires on it, and they put a new lower ball joint on the drivers side and did an alignment. When I took it home from the dealership the truck pulled to the passengers side. Now when I say pull, I mean If I let off of the wheel it will go to that side. If I hold the wheel straight, it will drive straight.
From there I figured since the steering was tighter to the drivers side and easier to turn the the passenger side that maybe the other lower ball joint needed to be replace. My theory on this was that the drivers would be tight and new while the passengers would be loose and worn out. So I had a guy just replace the uppers on both sides and the passenger lower (also had him do the brakes and rotors).
Well once I got it back from him it still pulled, I figure once again that now since maybe it had 3 new ball joints in it that maybe it needed an alignment. Well I took it to a different place to have an alignment. Well after about an hour of them playing with it in their machine they came back and said the alignment on it was perfect. I just shrugged my shoulders and left.
Later on that night I had an idea that maybe it was the new tires I bought. So I switched sides with the tires, and the damn thing still pulls to the passenger side.
Yesterday while driving it, my fuel pump goes out (yes, I have great luck). So today while changing the fuel pump I look at the Torsion bars. From there it looks like the passengers side is set up way more loose then the drivers side. After nothicing this, I came in to the computer went to this website and saw a few people talking about torsion systems and saying to get them equal that people will measure them (Fender to ground on both sides). I went ahead and did that once my fuel pump ordeal was done. Well turns out the Yukon actualy sits lower on the drivers side then it does the passenger side (by about a 1/2 inch). This makes no sense to me because of the fact at looking at them from underneth that the drivers side appears to be turned way more tight then the passenger side?????????????????
Now is where my questions start.............. Do you think this half inch lower in the drivers side height is causing my Yukon to pull to the passenger side? Also, a key peice of info is that it appears that the crown in most roads is what causes the Yukon to pull to the passenger side. Meaning if I'm in the fast line on the interestate the yukon will drive straight as an arrow, but as soon as I get into the slow lane it will pull to the passengers side all day long.
This steering thing drives me nuts! I hate that everytime I take my hand off the wheel I damn near go into the ditch.
If my alignment is fine, what would cause the Yukon to be loose to the passenger side and not be able to hold the crown on the road?
Thanks is advance for anybody who takes the time to read this novel and comment on it.
