I am looking to add a little bass to my stock (non-bose) system and I’m trying to do it on a budget. I’m not looking to rattle any windows, I just want a little “UMF” when I crank up the volume in the summer. However I’m faced with a dilemma that only an unfortunate few Yukon/Tahoe owners have … my truck has the 1st row bench (or jump seat), it does not have the center console like most. Therefore, I cannot install one of the custom MTX sub enclosures in the front and because I use the rear of my truck often for cargo I do not want to put a wood enclosure in the back on the floor. I’ve found the JL Audio enclosure that works with the jump seat but it’s $500 which is way too much for me given I still have to get an amp and get this thing installed.

So I’ve come up with two possible options to try and get what I can out of the “standard” speaker placements.

1. This is my preferred option as I think it will be the cheapest. Just upgrade the stock speakers in the doors and hook them up to an amp (or amps) to give them some more power. I’m hoping that a mid-level quality speaker (perhaps an RF Punch 1675) a will give me a noticeable improvement in the low end over the crappy stock speakers. I’ve never upgraded a stereo before without adding a dedicated Sub so I don’t know just how much of an improvement this option will give me. Any thoughts on whether this is a worthwhile solution?

2. Buy new speakers for the liftgate and run them as dedicated subwoofers with a proper crossover and dedicated amp. I’ll lose my highends in the back but I’m not that picky. My concern here is that running subs in the liftgate may cause the glass door to rattle, is this an issue that anyone is aware of?

Any comments or advice you guys can give will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Upgrading the speakers and adding and amp will definitely give you a noticeable improvement over the stock speakers. It might be possible to build a box out of mdf or even fiberglass like the JL Stealthbox that mounts to the rear quarter panel trim in the trunk. That would allow you do add a sub while still maintaining all trunk space. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/pictures_new.php?id=40372&picture_id=850334
