New Engine Oil and Oil Pressure

Howdy folks!

A few months ago I noticed that ACDelco's website https://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/catalog/catalog_search.php was showing a new oil for 4WD vehicles when I ran my VIN. The earlier 4WD long trucks came with aluminum engine blocks and thus see more expansion than cast iron blocks during operation. I'd been a little concerned that M1 was too thin, the motor noisy at start up which is "normal" and then quieted down. It also ran so much better with 4,000 OCIs compared to 5K-6K changes.

Anyhow, I researched the oil as best I could and found an SDS sheet with some specs and it showed higher viscosity numbers than the regular Mobil 1 I've been running. The oil is made by Phillips 66 Lubricants.

To make a long story short, getting hold of this stuff was not easy at first. First two companies had large minimums, one wanted me to buy 12 bottles, the other 195! Well, after more searching I found it down in Palm Beach county for $22 a bottle and it comes in case form, 3 bottles.

Since the change there is no more rattling cold motor starts and the oil pressure has actually increased all across the spectrum. I would say when hot, it is running about 3 psi more than before and a lot more when cold. I've NEVER seen the oil pressure gauge so high before. Idling at temperature is about 29 psi according to the Tech-2.

A while back we were all talking about pressures and I noticed that the Mobil 1 oil filter lowered my oil pressure, using the M1-212A and would alternate based on access and sales with the K&N HP2011. These are the long filters. Well, the K&N definitely allows for a higher oil pressure and that one inch nut makes removal a breeze (shhh, don't tell anyone that we use it to tighten the filter too!) I think the K&N gave about 2-3 more psi too.

At the end of the second oil change with this stuff, we'll send off a sample to Blackstone Labs. I have another sample of M1 sitting on my desk here waiting to go out too.

If anyone tries it, please let us know your experience with it too.

more viscosity but still listed as 5w-30? i thought it was best to run oil with higher zinc

but i did check and they lowered the price to $22.88 last time it was a few $$$ more for the 0w30 (claims to meet 5w30 and 10w30 requirements)


I'll be adding some Motorkote
that stuff seems to do what they claim. they claim it leaves a film that can't be washed off "but only sanded off".. but I think the hybrid will benefit because of the frequent HIGH SPEED starts.... starting the engine puts a lot of wear and tear on them

GMParts Giant was my first stop, they have a 12 bottle (5qt) minimum and shipping is very reasonable if one is inclined to buy 12 oil changes in advance!

Your oil pressure numbers allude to you having an iron block motor? I've never seen the needle past 50 psi that I recall, cold, hot or otherwise. The bypass spring in the M365 pump is 33 psi.

it's an Aluminum block she Powers on at 70PSI
it has a lot on common with the LS2 then it does with the reg 6.0

Cylinder Head Casting Number is the same (799 or 243)



seems like there is a lot of untapped potential with the engine the compression ratio is slightly lower at 10.7:1 but i'm sure VVT makes up for it.
the LS2 is 10.9:1

Just wondering are you noticing an increase in piston slap at idle with the higher viscosity? I am loyal to mobil1 but got caught up in the marketing for valvoline full syn and gave it a shot. same 5/30 but absolutely had higher gauge readings and to my surprise more noticeable piston slap at idle. I changed back to mobil 1 within 100 miles and the slap went away. i like oem products, wait now i get it! i thought your op was $22 a qt but now i see the "bottle" must mean 5 qt. thats not so bad.

I was loyal too. Only switched off when I ran a Jiffy Lube back in the 1990s for a spell. No more noises from the engine due to "thin" Mobil 1. That's why I switched.

Is that link for a single 5qt jug or three 5qt jugs?

Per 5 quart jug, they have a 12 bottle minimum Tom. It's a great price, even better than M1 from Walmart.
