New rings and pistons

So I took my Suburban in for the oil consumption test. After 1500 miles it wasnt showing on the dip stick anymore. They said no need to come back for the second reading and have scheduled me to come in and replace the rings and bearings.

Do they also hone the cylinders? I can't imagine they wouldn't but just checking.

I'm giving them some full synthetic oil to use instead of their "synthetic blend" and will hopefully be able to drive the snot out of it when it leaves the shop to properly seat the rings.

I guess I also need a tuner to turn off the AFM. Which tuner is most recommended? I had an SCT XCAL on my Ford 6.0L diesel so I would prefer something like that where I can download and install tunes when I want and return to stock for trips to the dealership.

No according to the bulletin they say not to hone just install piston kit and put back together. If there is a scratch and you can feel it w/ your fingernail then they say to replace block also

I guess I'm confused as to how this will work if you replace it with the same parts. For those who had this done did the new pistons & rings work or did it start consuming oil again?

This is disturbing - although you do not seam to upset by it. If you do not mind sharing - how many miles? What caused it? Under warranty? I thought the engine cylinder deactivation related issues were worked out by 2009.

I would also like to know what really fixes the OIL consumption issues , My 2009 Tahoe uses 1/2 quart per tank of fuel or 3/4 to 1 quart every 800-1000 miles and seems to be getting worse ..

please keep us posted ..

Here is a link to my thread where I cover what I did to improve oil consumption. So far, things are working out real well, and oil consumption has basically stopped or been dramatically reduced. I am nearing 2,000 miles on this oil change and it is still full on the dipstick, although it is down very slightly. This includes about 500 miles of towing a heavy travel trailer which would previously make the Yukon drink oil.

Ymmv based on your problem, mileage etc... mine has about 77,000 miles on it now and started burning at around the 50k mark. How many on yours and how long has it been burning oil?

And no, I don't think the AFM issues were resolved by 2009, from these forums, it seems that this has been an issue throughout the years of this model.
