most places charge a flat rate of $100. well since it is a diesel you probably know about glow plugs. but just in case you dont the glow plugs are used to preheat the chamber to get the fuel to burn initial by getting the atmosphere around it warm. when cranking cold the chamber pressure retards the ability of the fuel to explode from compression heat alone. they are (1 per cylinder) all wired to a central control relay it should not make any noise. but perhaps you should inspect the glow plug system for tight clean connections. you will find the relay at the upper end of a cylinder head somewhere. it will be fed with a large red wire from the power block and 4 wires to the left cylinder head colored orange and 4 to the right head colored orange/black will come from it. only thing that comes to mind regarding the noise at this time.

SUNLIT thanks for the reply I will check those connections. After having cleaned the speed sensors replacing the front brakes checking ABS fuses for power across them and disconnecting batteries the ABS light is still on, Any thoughts on that? I am still puzzled about the 4WD service light because you can hear it lock in and 4WD with out a doubt is working in 4 hi and low not certain about Auto mode but the service light still comes on, fuses are not blowing out. When the light does come on I have to turn the engine off and remove fuse 2 in order to shift back to 2WD very strange to me. I really appreciate your help.

i really need codes from both systems to narrow down the issues. but i want to ask are you see that the 4x4 system is defaulting to 4wd HI on its own every time it goofs up?

one other note dont disconnect the battery anymore. that only causes the powertrain control to loose its learned variances. and when you do go to a shop make sure you leave the engine running and those warning lights are on when you get there. if you shut it down it may reset the indicator lights temporarily and you run the risk of the tech saying they maybe can not see a code. possibility anyway.
