New to me 98 Tahoe

New member first post I Just bought a 98 2 dr 6.5 litre electric 4WD I think pretty much power every thing The PO was not available to explain any thing about the vehicle. First problem I have fixed I think was pwr seats did not work so I replaced the relay and now they work.I finally got 4 low to work and the SERVICE 4wd light came on but it did pull up a steep muddy hill that it would not climb in 2 wheel so I wonder about the service light?? Also can someone explain the 4 wheel auto, 4 Hi, and 4 low shifting procedures.Also what is the red neutral light that stays on in 2 wheel that is located next to the 4 wheel switches.Also when I got it the transfer case fuse inside the cab had ben pulled,what amp fuse should be there? I installed a 15 and it popped so I put a 20 in and it has been good since.I've only owned it for two days and I know there is a lot more I will have to do to it soon.Thanks in advance And I look forward to learning from all of you here.

the tcase system you have installed is more sophisticated then previous systems. it has the capability to diagnose different issues related with the 4wd system. on that system a scanner capable of reading manufacturer specific module is required. most shops with a advanced Snap-On or OTC scanner as well as dealers have the ability to do so. they can extract the specific code that will clue you in on what is going on. feel free to post the codes here and i can give you some tech data on the issues as you need it. i might also reccomend that while you have it check have them run scan on the steering, security, engine and abs module as well to get it done while it is there. it should cost the same for one or all of them. will look into your symptoms but what was the name or number of the fuse you replaced?

Thanks for the reply, The fuse I replaced was #2 I used a 20 amp fuse.The ABS light is also on. The Tahoe also has a problem of dying randomly.Thanks again.

i believe your shift motor is having issues but codes would narrow it down. as for the abs there are issues of dirty front sensors that cause the light. you should perhaps try to clean them off. any more details on the random dying?

Sunlit thanks so much for your replies and the link to the Chev. Tahoe owners manual. This afternoon I found a foil/insulated wiring connector
on the driver side that has 3 black wires inside the insulation with a somewhat triangle shaped red boot attached to the end. With the wire left hanging free it is located between the drive shaft and driver side torsion bar and I do not see where it should plug in. As you know I am new to this site but will attach a pic if I figure it out. The wire that attaches to the motor on the passenger side axle is hooked up and intact. As for my random dying problem It did not happen today. Last night I unplugged cleaned and applied dielectric grease to each sensor connection. I should also add that the vehicle had been left sitting for over a year. When I purchase it I went and filled it up with fresh diesel fuel and drove home with no stalling problems, around 30 miles. For now just staying close to home till I get the bugs worked out. Also I have noticed a clicking noise that sounds like a relay coming from inside the cab just before the 4 WD light comes on. Thanks so much for your help.

Does no one know where the wire above goes to ? Am I posting in the wrong area ? I need help with this Hoe as you guys call them. I'm so proud of this rig. I' have to take pix of it tomorrow so you can see why.

i am working on it but for now do not put anymore dielectric grease on the sensor connections.

i believe that connector it for the block heater. look for a freeze plug nearby that it would attach to. or if you dont see one get me a pic of where the other end is connected to.

I do not find anything that the plug will fit on too. I do see one fairly new freeze plug in the block.Did the 6.5 litre block heater fit into a freeze out in the block? As far as the grease goes do you think I should clean it out.

the heater might have been leaking and some one just put a regular plug in there. just leave the grease but dont do it any more. if you start getting sensor error then i would consider removing it.

Update

Thanks for the replies. The random engine stalling has quit at least for now. Pulled the brakes off pulled both speed sensors out and wiped the grease off of them, ABS light is still on. While I was there replaced pads and rotors. Have not yet had the vehicle to the dealer to scan for the 4WD service light, how much should I expect to pay to have the codes read? BTW the loose wire was for the block heater it has been removed but should be ok without it as temps her in TN. rarely drop below the mid teens. One other thing I wonder about is the wait to start light, turn the key to start wait for the light to go out and a humming noise continues and the wait to start light comes back on until the noise stops. The engine seems to start better and run quieter at start up if I wait until the noise quits. The noise also returns when I shut the engine off but does not last as long as when waiting to start. 6.5 litre diesel
