To me it seems like the 5.3 downshifts a lot. Slight throttle and it downshifts. At 75+ it stays in 9th a lot. I figure its time spent in higher gears is making it get worse mpg.

Depends...if the engines are made at NY or Spring Hill, won't be more.
If the replacements are made in Sailo or St Catherines...+25%, as of tomorrow.
