Hello folks. I have a 98 yukon 4x4 which has clocked 189k. I have recently been blessed with the rear diff going out as well as the transmission going out within the past week.

I am having the rear end rebuilt which is a 3.42 with the limited slip. Evidently this was already a replaced or rebuilt rear end (done by the prior owner) which come to find out, the truck was supposed to have an open diff based upon the service tag and the VIN. I elected to go ahead and have my guy put an Auburn LS gearset in which I hope is a dependable choice. All bearings, seals, ring and pinion are getting replaced with new. Is there a good recommended rear end fluid to use in this case?

As far at the trans goes, basically i lost reverse and 2nd gear. My transmission guy is rebuilding the entire transmission as well as installing a new chain in the transfer case and some kind of indexing sleeve or protective part to isolate the casing from being destroyed in case of a failure within that unit. Are there any other things I should have done to it while the trans is out of the vehicle as well?

As soon as I can get the truck back, i'm gonna go through the quest of tightening up the front end which I began replacing parts on a couple weeks ago. Also, I will be replacing shocks and brakes on this beast. I've read through several hours worth of previous posts, and my eyes are about to explode if I continue. Any advice or tips to look out for on these trucks would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I got a 98 yukon as well, going on 205k miles.. and still purrs like a kitten :D

Im surprised that yours came with 3.42 gears being 4x4, no tow package? Mine came with 3.73 and am going to 4.10's soon. As far as gear oil, use the recommended oil for limited slip diffs. Theres suppose to be this additive in the oil thats specific for limited slip diffs.

unknown at this time.
How about a sift improvement kit with your tranny work or perhaps some new polyuerathane mounts. Maybe even a new aftermarket dii cover with fins. All while it is in the shop already.

Vette servo + Superior 4th gear Superhold servo.

Quicker, crisper shifts, less downshifting out of OD on the highway and while towing = less transmission heat = longer transmission life.

Thanks for the tips fellas. This is my girlfriends' truck and im bound and determined to get this hunk of crap back into reliable shape. I myself am highly surprised that it has 3.42's for gearing. I would have expected it to have 3.73's , but that is what the VIN reads out when I checked it against a stealership parts guy.
Anybody got any tips where to get seats, upholstery, replacement BS?

My '99 Yukon, 4x4 w/towing package has a 3.42 open rear axle.......

If it were to ever fail, I'd definately go with a posi.

Agrred with the vette servo and shift kit. Helps with towing and general driving at highway speeds. Mine has 3.42 gears and an open diff as well. Got the tow package too.
