blanchard7684,Right there with you: I just did an oil change yesterday and again found the same results. 8 qts with full oil filter gets the oil halfway on cross hatch area of dipstick. I added another half quart and it was right at or maybe a tad over the top of the cross hatch.
I checked oil level the night I drove home with new Suburban. It set for about 2 hours on flat ground. (I was looking everything over on the SUV. )
The level was over the top of the cross hatch area.
Thanks for your feedback, this is what I was trying to find out all along, has anyone seen these engines requiring close to 9 quarts at oil change. I matched the oil level in my engine with what the factory oil fill was. While it was back around 2015 as I recall, GM actually released a technical bulletin reducing the oil fill on the gasoline V8 engines from 8.5 quarts to 8 quarts for the oil fill. I did check the oil pan part number on the eariler engines and it is different than the current generation, I would guess there may have been minimal differences. I think the issue was that having to deal with 1/2 quart of oil was a bit of an issue as dealers and service facilties as they would charge out 9 quarts for an oil change and some people would then get fussy about the engine only needing less than 9 quarts??
Anyway, my plan is to run with the 9 quarts at oil change, EVEN if it may be slightly above the hash marks on the dipstick, which it did not appear to be, but maybe with the ultra clean oil it was hard to see slightly above the hash marks until I get more miles on the vehicle and the dirty oil caught in the engine oil cooler and in the engine darkens even new oil a bit more.
Even if the engine was running 1 quart high on oil it will not cause any signfigant problem, and at most I would think with 9 quarts it is either at the correct level or not more than 1/2 quart or 16 oz above full. Looking at how large the oil pan/lower engine block area is, this would be around 1/4" difference in fluid height which is measured with the engine off at least a few hours after operation. Who knows how much oil is trapped in the top end of the engine and not draining back while the engine is in operation, so a slighty higher level is most likely a non issue.
I will keep an eye on my levels, but will likely continue to run 9 quarts in the engine after oil changes. Really do not think this is going to be a problem. I am sure a few folks may have different opinions!
