Either use Mobil One or a Valvoline Synthetic. They are the only two oil companies with a Lab to test and hone thier oils.

I like fram extra guard filter (silver one).

X2 on valvoline blended or full synthetic... just be careful with synthetic.. if u have any oil leaks now they will probably be worse after u use synthetic

Exactly.

In my personal opinion, with a rig that has that kind of mileage, find out if it has lived its life on conventional or synthetic. I always stick with the same type of oil my engine has lived on...especially with the mileage our OBS typically have.

As long as you change your oil REGULARLY, conventional or synthetic, you're in good shape :) But you can absolutely have leaks if you "switch" to synthetic on a high mileage engine.

All of the oils listed above I have heard good reviews on. Stay away from the $10/qt (i.e. Royal Purple, Motol), it's a lot of money for an engine that is never going to race.

My personal preference - Mobile 1 oil and their filters. If Mobile 1 is used exclusively by Chevy, it's good enough for me!! <<Be careful with Fram, i've heard of issues with their internal design>>

I like AMSOIL and Mobil 1 - as other people have said, as long as you stay on top of your maintenance you should be fine with conventional oils as well.

This is not true. Amsoil was the first company to offer full synthetic engine oils for the automotive industry in 1972 and has been developing and testing their oils in their own labs since. They also offer warranted service intervals of up to 3X OEM recommended intervals when used in vehicles in good running condition.

This is true for the most part. On vehicles with extremely high mileage you want to take the former service of the vehicle into account along with the current condition of the vehicle. ie: If you already have a coating of oil sludge on the outside of the engine, or obvious leaks, do not flush the engine oil and stick with synthetic until you replace or rebuild the engine. These engines usually also have worn out seals and gaskets and doing a flush or putting synthetic in not only causes leaks because they flow better, most synthetics clean as they protect and as they do they remove the built up sludge inside the engine AWAY from the seals and gaskets and that actually opens up the seals causing the leaking to get worse.

ALL synthetics are better than conventional for protection on qualifying vehicles, while most offer extended service intervals that if utilized can help to reduce overall maintenance costs.

5 quarts of oil. I use our bulk 5w30 at work. (Mobile) For filters, I use a AcDelco PF52 filter.

When I build my 383, I'll use either Mobile 1 Synthetic or AMSOIL.

I use a conventional oil, no synthetic. 5W30 Mobil 1 or Valvoline high mileage.
Filter = Wix or any reputable brand.
5 quarts

A long as you change your oil regularly and stick with that routine you will be fine with whatever choice you make. If you choose to use syn, try a blend first. Personally I dont think it's worth the extra expense in a high mile motor, especially if you've had leaks in the past or have factory gaskets. Now, if you've got a rebuilt or crate thats pretty stout. I would recommend using a quality synthetic oil.
