I had no trouble with leaks after changing my block off gasket. I used the ACDelco one, no sealant. There is RTV specifically rated for oil.
Also, checking the rear main by looking through the bell housing inspection plate doesn't mean there is no leak from the rear. There is a rear main cover that leaks, but you won't be able to see it through the flexplate. When the oil drains down the back of the plate, it can hit the top lip of the oil pan and drain off to the side. In this way, the back of the engine will actually look dry even if you have a bad leak. How do I know this? It happened to me.
However, it's always good to change the easy to reach gaskets first. They're cheap and easy to do. The rear cover and rear main is a royal PITA!
