How does the oil life work? I had my oil changed over 3000 miles ago. My life still says 50% . Should I change it now or wait until it says to? First oil change with truck

Depends on the vehicle apparently. I know my 2013 chevy cruze requires an oil change every 7500 miles or so (according to the cars computer and owners manual) while both of my Yukons (98-92) require them every 3000... at least according to the owners manuals. What I don't understand is how? are the filters that much better? or is the design of the engines that much more efficient ? or is it the Oil better? I always go with the manufacture spec. Cant go wrong there IMO

The oil change cycle is based on milage, you can change your oil, and not reset the oil change cycle, and it will read to change the oil @ the 7500 mile interval based on the synthetic blend oil GM uses from the factory. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic extended life oil (dexos 1 approved) and change it @ 10K along with an extended filter (6.2L-AC Delco PF63), this increases the capacity of my oil change to 6 1/2 Qts.

My truck is an 07 with 5.3. The previous owner had the oil changed a couple days before I picked it up. Its been about 3500 now and the delta sonic sticker says to change it. So the computer knows when the oil is going bad and it tells me? I thought it went by mileage. I checked my oil 1000 miles ago just to see if it was low and it was still full.

I'd never trust the computer.
Change the oil based on the type of oil you use, how and where you drive it, and the milage on the car.

No sir it does not, it is based on a 7500 miles driven, it is set that way from the factory.

Ok thanks. My truck is an 07 5.3L with 120k on it. I'm not sure what oil the previous owner was using. Im going to ask him but im just going to assume conventional. Is it too late to switch to conventional?

That is actually incorrect. It takes in account for mileage, temperature, speed and a bunch of other algorithms shit to come up with the percentage of oil life left. 7500 might be fairly close but it definitely not just based off of mileage. It's all done through the PCM.

@Chetrick87 just change your oil. If you want a safe bet, change it every 3k-4k. I have a 07 5.3l with 127k and been using mobil 1 full synthetic since i bought it at 60k miles. Change every 5k-6k. I have to put a quart in around 4k. Whether you use synthetic or conventional is entirely up to you.

Sir, I have changed my oil in this vehicle (2013 Yukon Denali) with Mobil 1 extended performance, and purposely DID NOT RESET the oil life monitor, within 1 month (I drive no more than 250 miles per month), the change oil came on the DIC, so I cleared it wrote down the miles, and viola @ 7500 miles afterward (over 2 years) the change oil came on the DIC.
