I had the strangest thing happen yesterday on 07 (290k) - driving at around 55 mph and all of sudden I get the warning light low oil pressure shut off engine. I immediately pulled over and when the rpm dropped it went off.

I can't say what the pressure was when I pulled over because it caught me so off guard. However, once i got to the shoulder the light was off and pressure was normal - around 35ish.

I shutdown, popped the hood nothing out of the ordinary. Checked the oil it was fine. Started it back up no light and decided to take some side roads home slower pace, no issue.

Later in the day, took it back out drove around and the oil pressure was reading like it always does somewhere between 35-50 and no warnings?

I am wondering if its oil pump starting to go bad?

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Tim

I say keep driving it but throw 2 extra quarts in the back in case it happens again. Could it be the pick up tube o-ring?

An oil pump doesn't "start to go bad" in the sense of intermittently acting up.

I'd follow the suggestions given so far: Change the oil and filter (use quality filter and oil), check the sensor and the screen underneath it and do the O-ring test.

Gents,

I have changed the oil pressure sensor about 10,000 miles ago.

It hasn't done it again and oil pressure seems to be what it always is. I change the oil every 3,500 and use Valvoline HM blend and Puralotor ONE filters. I am about 400 miles out from a change, I'll go ahead and change it out.

Thanks for all the feedback!

When u replaced the sensor did you remove the screen filter? If so then the only other problem would be the pick-up tube washer in the oil pan. It’s known to go bad especially with the mileage on your truck.

I can’t say because mines hasn’t deteriorated as of yet. I am giving you advice from similar responses from this same underlying issue.

This happened to my 2008 GMC Yukon Denali about a month ago. Same exact incident, pulled over, oil level fine, warning light off, and nothing since. It was a really hot day, after towing our trailer up the mountain. Plimbob, has yours acted up since?
