ok NOW i need some help

i tugged on all the boots at the plugs and number 6 came off like nothing. i pushed it on and restarted the engine and now it runs worse than before. it won't stay running for more than 10 seconds before it dies.

i'm going to take the distributor out again and double check that. i couldn't get the scan tool so i don't know what codes are on it.

It's a long shot, but double check the connection on the oil pressure sending unit.

Pretty sure these trucks shut off the fuel if the oil pressure doesn't come up.

Could just be running out the prime...........

i found this thread while searching for other similar issues and this sounds very close to what i am experiencing.

i didn't spend a whole lot of time on it tonight, but i think i got cylinder 1 at TDC. the line/mark on the crank pulley is lined up with the notch on the front cover and i cannot get a wood dowel into the spark plug hole very deep. my son said he felt "a little" air come out when he had his hand over the hole. tomorrow i will take the cap off and go from there. btw, when i took the plug out, it was very black and smelled like gas. hmm.

apparently, just because you put the distributor in the same way it came out doesn't mean it's right.

i saw the video referred to in the other thread and saw how the distributor was connected to the oil pump. it got me to thinking. i checked the slot (no easy task, in the dark) and it was off about 45º. i managed to feel my way with a screwdriver to get it straightened out and the distributor, all lined up, went right in with the rotor pointed right at the "8" on the distributor. put everything back together and it started right up and ran smoothly.

unfortunately, the scan tool i borrowed is not specialized enough to be able to dial in the timing, but the tahoe is running nicely. so far, it appears to not be leaking anything (knock on wood) and my butt dyno says it seems a little more responsive and torquey.

i disconnected the scan tool before i drove it, but tomorrow i plan to leave it connected to make sure all the monitors run and check for pending codes. wish me luck.

thanks! i think this is the toughest repair i was willing to make of the few things it needs.

i think i will pay to have the idler and pitman arms replaced. i don't really feel like f'ing with those. it needs rear shocks, a transfer case seal (that i have the seal driver for), and maybe some brake work. other than that, some cosmetic ish, and i'll wait til the next thing fails!

So when you had the dist in the first time, it wasn't seated in all the way to the manifold? If the oil pump isn't lined up correctly you won't get the dist in all the way. Glad to hear its running again though.

Dude, if you're comfy doing the manifold gasket, the pittman and idler arms will be cake. I did a how-to for you in the tech section. :)
