Okay I've been having issues on over night cold temp start ups. I replaced intake gaskets, plugs and wires (I found it had the original plugs @ 192k), coolant temp sensor, knock sensors due to previous CEL on when I got her. It had a fuel filter replaced before I got her and new MAF sensor(Dorman part #). That's just a small list of basics I've replaced. Now it still does it if over night its 40 degrees outside. Itll fire spit and sputter till it feels like running smooth. Sometimes in really cold weather itll fire then die up to 6 tries. After replacing the coolant temp sensor I noticed this black box scotch locked into the coolant temp sensor wires. Definitely not OEM. Lol I opened it even tho it was sealed and it says Hammond 1551G inside and it has a resistor inside. What the heck is it I cant find much info on it.

Looks like that Hammond thing just just a plastic enclose piece you can buy and the rest is assembled by McGuyver or whoever lol.

My guess is someone was trying to trick the computer, probably because Bubba said it would make more power with a different temp reading.

That black box on the IAT sensor is an old school eBay "performance module". They make the computer think the outside temp is always cooler than it actually is, so the computer is always adding more fuel and timing than necessary. People started mounting a resistor inside a plastic project box with wires routed outside to make it look like a legit "performance module" and sold them for $10 to $50 or more. Waaay back in the day, I tested this with a resistor I bought from Radio Shack (Got a 5-pack for 99 cents). These don't work because as soon as the engine gets detonation (spark knock, preignition, pinging, etc.), it retards the timing, negating anything the "trick" may have produced. Trash it.
