closed loop refers to the operating mode of the powertrain computer. try watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG_Xc1nP9aI
you can get a scanner to look at data for issues with tech support here. may want to invest in a scangauge2. can read codes and live data on its display as well as trip function like mileage and tank calculations. mount it where ever the cord will reach and enjoy.
use video as example tuck had been running for several hours. i have no cooling glitches just a pcm issue which is causing the power loss and shifting issue you see in the video. btw i use flex a lit 280electric fan kit so don't worry about the temp gauge sweeping a bit.

if a scanner reading about the same from it connection to a different coolant sensor then thermostat is very likely stuck open. or if you don't mind a quick mess now drop the coolant level some replace it. and be prepared to top off radiator but then later the reservoir a few time when cold. eventually it will level out. you need a 195° thermostat. don't let anyone sell you a different one. and yes it will work well in kingman weather. i was there a few months ago.
while it is running look for temperature swings in the data. like start cold, watch what temp it goes up to and what it drops down and back up to again. post results here to see if it is actually working. unless you saw it do that don't presume it is working yet. what other kind of data can you read?
