Are you referring to the cabin air filter that is under the glove box? If so, I tried changing that a few years ago when I first noticed the smell but it didn't make a difference. I should probably change again, but haven't yet.

I spent some time last night trying to sniff around to pinpoint the smell. I noticed it was strong in the back of the vehicle on the driver's side (near gas tank). I pulled off the compartment where the jack is and noticed a strong smell from there. I'm hoping that the smell has been trapped in there and that it will go away with being opened up. I ran my hand around the compartment and it didn't smell like gas and I can't see a way that gas could have gotten in that compartment when spilling over out of the tank. I'm hoping this helps to make the smell go away.

As a follow up to my post about the smell coming from the compartment where the jack is, that definitely seems like the source of the smell. However, i don't see much if any improvement in the smell. I haven't had a chance to get in there to try to clean it well, but I'm not sure how much difference that will make. Is there any way it could be more than lingering fumes? There shouldn't be a way that gas could have gotten in there is it?

Pull the wheel well cover and see if gas is leaking on the full tube.

Is there any trick to pulling off the wheel well cover?

I've also seen some posts about the evap cannister. Could that have been damaged while over filling?

I'm going take to the shop and see if they can find anything. The smell is strong so figure it is worth taking to a professional.

Just tug on it and see where it attaches. It may have one or two number 7 screws the rest will be under trim just tucked in. It's easier than taking off a interior panel so don't fret if you have never done it before.

So I'm pulling it off from the outside of the vehicle not trying to do anything from the inside? Sounds easy enough.

Yes I would start at the top of the wheel well. It will definitely just be tucked In there. If there are any screws they will be towards the back. No need to pull the front. I am sorry I can't be of more help. I have a nnbs.
