I had a read a few says ago on here that a guy thinks he blew up his tranny from overheating and having the wrong gearing. These 4L60s he mentioned weren't exactly the most bulletproof. He said he thought it blew because he wasn't geared to fit his 33" tires. That's what I'm planning to put on.

Should I regear? And if I do what ratio should I go with? Stock, I believe is 3.42? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks in advanced fellers.

There were several factory options on gear ratios...
3.42 was common on the 2x4
3.73 was common on the 4x4

Other common options: 3.08, 3.23, 4.10, etc. depending on year and options ordered.

Look in your glove box to read the RPO codes to determine what actually came on your truck from the factory. Below is a list matching the RPO code to the factory rear axle ratio:
  • GT4 = 3.73
  • GT5 = 4.10
  • GT7 = 3.33
  • GT9 = 2.87
  • GU2 = 2.73
  • GU4 = 3.08
  • GU5 = 3.23
  • GU6 = 3.42
  • GU7 = 2.77
  • GU8 = 3.90
