Hi all, it's been a while since I've posted last on here, but here I am again with yet another problem... In November, I replaced the EVAP canister that's mounted above my spare tire, because my vehicle was throwing DTC code P0449. For the past few weeks, my car has been giving off an almost unbearable gas smell. It was subtle at first, but now I can smell it inside the cabin at redlights. The CEL wasn't on, so I assumed that it was just some random thing I was doing, maybe I had spilled gas or something I thought. Thursday evening, the smell got really bad and the CEL came on. I took the truck to AutoZone to get the trouble code, and it's P0451 which is "Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor / Switch Range / Performance"... What now? Has anyone else experienced this problem or am I just lucky? The rep at AutoZone told me that it was very dangerous to drive the truck with the fuel vapor being so prominent, but is he right? I've drove it for a month like this? I hope that there's a simple solution to this, because honestly I don't have the time for this vehicle to constantly be failing me like it is... Could I just buy another EVAP canister thingy like I did before and replace it? I really hope that I can, I'm to the point that I just want rid of the truck, it's been nothing but a hassle... It's been cranking funny too, the first time I start the truck during the day, it cranks for what seems like forever, and when it starts, it idles funny too... This week I hope to buy a new battery (the one that's in the truck is some autozone garbage that the previous owner bought in November 2009), an oil change (I'm actually a quart low, because this wonderful piece of american ingenuity consumes oil), and hopefully resolve this gas issue... Please help me...

Yes, it can be dangerous to drive a vehicle with the gas fumes being that prominent. Carbon Monoxide is no jokes!!

It wouldn't hurt to try and replace the EVAP again since that's the code that is being thrown. A new battery may help the cranking, but if there is some other underlying issue it certainly won't fix it.

I'm sorry to hear that it has been a hassle for you, but just stick in there! These are great trucks - but like all things - they have their issues and their oddities.

The oil consumption is a common issue with these vehicles. If you are still under warranty I would go to the dealership and have them perform an oil consumption test to make sure that there is nothing else going on there. I've seen a few threads about it on this site.

Update:

I spoke with my mechanic earlier today, and he seems to have found the issue. P0451 (Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor / Switch Range / Performance) indicates that the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor needs replacing, however, we don't think this is my main problem. I didn't think the vehicle was actually leaking gas, because I hadn't noticed any puddles underneath the vehicle, I had noticed that it was becoming harder to keep gas in it, but I figured that I was just running it out. Today, he got under the truck and noticed the bottom of the tank was wet, he ran his fingers across it, and of course, it's gas. We have now figured out that there is definitely a gas leak, which would obviously explain the stench. Although we haven't determined that the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor is defective, we will be replacing it, seeing as how there isn't a return policy. Right now, I'm just hoping that it's just a line with a hole in it, and not the actual tank. I will give more updates as the process continues.

Thank you to the Blairian, for at least trying to help me.

Hi Robby,
I have the problem you mentioned above. Not bad yet...How hard is it and how much time does it take to drop the gas tank?

Since the problem started once you changed the canister, logic would dictate to start checking there. Make sure all the lines got hooked up correctly, double check your install. Then you can check for proper function with a tech scan tool. My bet it something is unhooked or not sealing properly/a bad canister (cracked) or something. Good luck.
