I have a 2004 Tahoe and it is stuck away from home, sniff, sniff. I have read about the secondary lock on the spare, but if I understand it right this is when the cable is playing out and the tire won't drop.

Well I can't get the cable or tire to drop. It has been over a year or so since I have had to use the spare and now I am even questioning that I am doing this right.

I am using the flattened/curved end of the tool to try to lower/crank it down. I feel the tool fit in place turn it and...nothing....any help/info on this would be greatly appreciated. Have already decided to replace the winch if I do get it down.

I really don't sleep well at night knowing my baby ain't at home. :mwah1: I miss my baby....

Many Thanks

Likely sticking cable and secondary safety latch

Hey Ozhawk,

Take a look at these videos for your answers, The secondary safety latch sticks (and the cable) keeping that spare from dropping - I think the videos will cover your fix.

There's detailed instructions in your owners manual, so look there too, but I think the videos will say it all.

Maybe others here will chime in too!

Let us know how it goes!!

Since the cable is not dropping at all...

I wonder if these videos would help...I may be wrong because I am not a mechanic, but I had also seen these videos except for the one by Laura where they had removed the license plate...I am hoping that hole will also be there on my tahoe so that I can at least possibly get above the tire to try to do something. (I didn't see this until after coming back from my third trip to try to resolve this today). I really appreciate your help/answer and will give it a try, but if anyone else has any thoughts for when you are not getting ANY play in the cable when reverse cranking the winch I would like the input. I plan on taking Joe's input and any others I can get with me when I go back tomorrow. Didn't want to buy a spare so that I can keep that money to get two new tires for the rear (which is where the dead tire is). (whichever solution works in a non drop issue where the cable is not dropping at all, I will post here with a Thumbs up icon.)

Many Thanks Joe.

Not sure how yours works, but I use the larger squared, box, opened end of the rod to remove my spare. Not the flat curved sided one. I believe that was made for OEM jack to lift and lower?. I have a 2001 Tahoe NBS, and know all the tires I have removed, my vehicle and others, with same style body years. Have used the box squared end to fit into the cable guide, mechanism. But do beleive the older style may have used the curved flat end, but can't remember off top of my head. So may be worth while to try the larger of the sides, box, opened, square end. And sounds right that it should be the box end, cause if your installing rod, and it's turning but nothing is happening, no resistance or feel. Don't think you are using correct end.

Also try going up, and then back down in the cranking. The cable may have gotten caught up in the mechanism and isn't wanting to release. So try maybe hitting/tapping it, turning it up, turning it down and hitting/tapping it. To see if you can free it ip. it may be caught. Hope it helps.

^^^Good idea!!!

Also, have someone under the truck, pulling on the cable with a large channel lock pliers while you're up above turning the mechanism.

Tell us how it goes!
