Will those OE wheels clear a set of drop spindles without having to grind the ball joint nut?

No, you'll have to trim the stud on any 17" wheel with spindles.

Thats what they say, but sometimes it takes some trimming on the actual nut too from what I have heard.
The fit with just 20s tucked behind those spindles is so tight that it looks like 17s could not dream of fitting but who knows.

I was stoked to have 20s when I did my spindles, I already modified a few things the instructions didn't account for and the last thing I wanted to do was cut up my balljoints.

That is why I am asking cause a buddy of mine had spindles on his 05 CC and he had the aluminum 5 spokes and he had to trim down the nut to clear them. I have the aluminum 6 spokes but I have a set of steel 8 holes that I can use for backups and I hope that I won't have to do alot of cutting.
