Long story short-noticed intermittent loss of power steering in low speed turns (mostly pulling into parking spaces, and backing out). Went to AZ, got new power steering pump and began the tedious process of removing the old pump. Old pump has the Variable assist sensor on the back, and it would not come off-assuming it is the original from 2001. New pump did not have this sensor, and not enough play in the old hose to connect it. DO I have to spend 50 bucks on the bypass thing? Can a local shop make me one for a few bucks (looks like a 90 degree bend of brake line with fittings)?
I ended up putting it all back together with the bad pump, and seems to be working ok for now, but would like to get it fixed ASAP-plus now the belt is squealing like crazy (pulley may be off a mm or two due to the front threads being stripped out and having to put it back on with a hammer!)
I saw somewhere there is a replacement pump that has the bypass already built in, but can't seem to locate one. HELP!
