Like the title says this is a non tahoe, yukon ?’s but I know you guys will help me.

I might get my hands on a 89 chevy pick-up with the 350 engine it has a 4 speed manual transmission. But it has a problem it run’s really bad and it shoots black smoke throught the tail pipe and after a couple of weeks it don’t want to turn on until I change the spark plugs then it turns on right way and the plugs that was taken of are really black. I know he has checked the timing on it tho.

Background on truck.

It was purchase in the summer of 2007 and it was running good no problems with it until the winter when gas prices started to get high for the owner to drive it so he parked it and didn’t drive it and it sat parked from December 2007 to march 2009 when the owner tried to turn it on it wouldn’t turn on so he had to put a new fuel pump and it started doing what I mention on top then he messed with it a lil and no luck so he parked it again around September of 2009 and hasn’t mess with it all.

Running rich.
Was a full tune up done or just the spark plugs?

Check the injectors to make sure they are not leaking...Also check the oil and see if it has any gas in it.

Sounds to me like the put the wrong fuel pump on it. 88 thru 95 models require 9 to 13 psi. Later Models use 60-66 psi.

It has to be burning very rich to get the results you are having. Take the cover off the air cleaner and see if you can see fuel leaking around the injectors. Also check the fuel pressure to be sure it's correct.

Let us know what you find.................:)

After thinking about it for a few hours, the fuel pressure regulator could also be the problem. It is located in the top of the TBI.

Another possiblilty would be the return fuel line, pinched or restricting flow. You probably don't have a easy access to checking fuel pressure, but it should be evident if you watch the injectors if they are being over powered by too much pressure.

A T fitting would have to be added to the fuel input to your TBI to check the pressure with a gauge. :)

The truck is runing rich you can bearly drive it sometimes cause the gas smell gets really bad im gona check the regulator and the injectors and also to check if the correct fuel pump was put on and how can i tell if it has gas in the oil is it going to look like it has water or different or is just going to have a really bad gas order to it? Im gona try to check the fuel pressure also. Also the tune up was done to see if it helped but it didnt.

Thanks guys for you help.

If it turns out the fuel pump is correct and the return line is open, it looks like the Fuel meter cover/fuel pressure regulator assembly is sold as a replacement part. The injectors themselves might be getting tired too.

Gas mixes with oil, so it would just start thinning the oil, but should evaporate off as well. You might be able to smell gas on the dip stick.

If you get into the TBI fuel lines, be sure to use a back up wrench, to unhook them without damaging the steel lines.
