Can anyone enlighten me on the sounds of a failing rear diff axle bearing? I think mine on the rear left is failing? No loose in the wheel but when I turn right at 30-50km/h I hear a grinding metal sound on the left rear wheel. When I turn left no real sound. When I hit bumps on the left side going straight sound comes back briefly then goes away.No sounds at high speed ?!? I checked all this
- parking brake pads removed
-dust shield pryed away from rotor
- pads are new
-shocks,sway bar,stabalizee tie rods all a-1
-Ujoints a-1
-driveshaft a-1
Caliper/caliper bracket solid and caliper free floats on pins

I'm down to the axle bearing but no end play and no grinding when wheel is in the air.Sometimes no sound from wheel for 1-2 minutes

You don't say how many kms on the odometer, but assuming a lot, you could drain the differential, change out the axle seals and bearings. That eliminates a part that takes a lot of side load when turning. They are probably close to needing to be replaced. Sometimes you just have to go with what seems like the highest probability, when no cause is obvious. There isn't anything else on the rear corners that would cause grinding(based on your statement about what you checked already), unless you have big tires (with a lowered body) that are grinding on the fender.

You can look at youtube (or 1aauto.com) for how to remove the axles-there are bolts and clips in the differential that hold the axles in. 1/2 ton does not need an axle puller! You will need to rent or borrow a bearing puller/installer kit.

Sometimes wheel bearings don't make a noise that is obvious until side-loaded, so that may be why you don't hear any noise until you turn.
