I did manage to use the transmission jack. One hint is to use a piece of plywood bolted to the stage of the jack. This gives a little friction so it doesn't slide right off. It also helps to support the transmission on blocks and remove the transmission crossmember and mount. Doing this I was able to raise the TC right up and engage a bolt or two. it took me 4 hours to figure that out. 
I'm not a strong guy, so lifting the TC into position was not an option.
