Replace factory subwoofer 2001 Yukon xl

I have a 2001 Yukon xl non Bose and the factory rear sub is blown. I mean really blown it sounds terrible. I hear it is an 8 inch 2 ohm but I was curious how hard it would be to throw in a new cheap one in place. Would I need to run a amp? I have stock head unit too. I am probably going to throw in some sony xplod speakers in the front and middle seats like I did with my silverado which help a lot. Would this be worth it or is the factory sub box and head unit amp too bad to keep with a new sub. I am not looking for a window and mirror shaking sound, just some good lower end bass. Thanks

I disconnected the factory sub in mine didn't like the sound. And I have a 15" Diamond audio sub in custom box. I spliced the wires from the factory sub and ran them to my 15" sub. Granted it was way underpowered by the factory amp but sounded a lot better than stock. I have since installed a Kenwood HU and Hifonics amp. Still have factory sub disconnected. I'm quite sure a 10 or 12 inch sub running off the factory amp would sound nice given the right sub and box combo.

I've kind of wondered a similar question. I have no interest in custom boxes other than perhaps under the 2nd row seats. But before I do that, is it effective to replace the Bose subs with aftermarket subs of the same size (or, will bigger fit?)?

I'm in same boat. I wonder if the Bose is an 8inch 2ohm too.

Factory sub in a suburban or XL for 99-02 is a 8" 2 ohm in the rear cargo area. The 03-06 are a 6.5" in the center console. I believe the short wheelbase is the same. People have swapped the stock and for a pioneer or kicker shallow mount and run off the stock amp and claim to have good results. Others have ran a aftermarket amp and sub in the stock location. I am sure this would be better.

I would say the 2nd row seat box would give you more bass.

Put in another 8 inch

I had another 8 inch sub inside a box that was used for a home audio system. I unscrewed it and drilled it into the factory sub box with the factory amplifier. It sounds a lot better, is not real good as far as heavy bass goes, but it doesn't make the weird bottoming out sound that the factory sub made. The factory sub was actually torn halfway around inside the cone. They are pretty cheap speakers.

Heres a video of what I put in mine for future reference. The 8 inch woofer I have is about 250-300 rms. 500 watts peak and you def know that you have some bass in the truck. May want to add a little dynomat when it gets really going.
