You should hear and feel when a hub is going bad. Hard to miss really. Sounds like metallic grinding.

To the original poster - Did you ever tow anything with the truck? 300k is pretty good.

Towed my 93 mustang GT from Kansas to my house in Missouri when I moved here 2 years ago, of course that was about 120k miles ago. Didn't have any problems. I had the tow/haul button pushed in the entire time. Towed an 89 GT roller home from a guys house last year, but that was only about 50 miles and the car was bare bones so it didn't weigh much more than 2000 lbs. Other than hauling tons of gear on one of those flat racks that goes into the receiver, and tons of camping gear in the back, I never have much of a need to tow anything.

I think i need to replace my front hubs, just broke 100k and I started hearing this grinding noise a couple of weeks back from the front. I only heard it sitting in gear, like at a stop sign or light. How much does the assembly cost? and where can I find it at? I have a 2001 4x4 tahoe. I changed my front diff fluid two weeks ago, and pulled out a shit ton of metal shavings from the drain plug. Im hoping its the hubs and not my front diff going out, that would suck balls.

Hubs don't make noise if they aren't turning. IE if you are sitting at a stop light and you hear metal on metal grinding, its not the hubs. The hub is the bearing assembly on which your wheel turns.

Hubs can be bought at autozone, oreilly's, napa, etc, or even junk yards for much cheaper. New assemblys, are around $160. At least they were when I bought mine. Removal is as easy as removing all of the brake components, unbolting the caliper brackets, removing the rotors, unplugging the abs sensor, and removing the 3 15mm bolts from the back side of the hub (4x4 models will be more difficult just because of the half shafts being in the way) then removing the hub. Usually you have to beat it out from the back side as its been in a long time, corrosion will have it tightly in place. Or you can beat on the front of it to loosen it up as well.

Its not hard, I changed one out in a hotel parking lot with a set of 3/8" sockets and a couple jack stands.
