The more expensive Wellers are nice. I started out with a cheap unit from Radio Shack which was junk. My next unit was a Weller Thermaboost that I got from part-express.com for about $25. I later saw that Lowes sells the same exact one for a similar price. I still use it to this day for a lot of jobs I do. But don't expect it to solder any wires together thicker than 14 gauge. It can barely do that. But for smaller wires and soldering on circuit boards, it's awesome.
