I've tried searching around, couldn't exactly find my issue.
2001 tahoe, 5.3, 4l60e, 275k on clock, bought at ~265k.
despite high miles, the only serious leak is power steering pump (and wiper fluid; i see that those bottles are a common issue), and there are no serious wobbles or rattles - truck is really in pretty good shape.
recently did an oil change and tranny fluid drain and fill (pan has plug). used whatever synthetic 5W30 was on sale w/ a purolater BOSS filter (supposedly a step up from the trusty pureONE filter). tranny fluid was the valvoline maxlife dex 6. this is the 3rd oil change i've done, and the 2nd tranny drain and fill.
i ride a motorcycle to work and the girl friend usually rides a bicycle to work, so the truck will often sit for few days between starts. after this latest fluid change, this first cold start after a long layover is accompanied by a strange noise right as the truck actually kicks over. I want to say it almost sounds like gears grinding, but it's not quite that loud/distinct. just an extra loud noise that wasn't there on starts previous to this oil change, no matter the time between successive starts.
i typically just add a full 6 qts during an oil/filter change (rather than measuring), but I try to measure/replace the tranny fluid. This time, fearing an overfill, I actually added a little less tranny fluid than I took out. Oil level seems fine and oil pressure is constantly 50-65. When I try to check tranny fluid level (engine hot, running, park), level always appears to be 2-3 inches above marks on dipstick, but I assume that is either fluid left on tube, or fluid being stirred around by running engine, as SURELY being overfilled by THAT much would cause me considerable problems. I don't see any evidence of bubbles/foam on dipstick (oil or tranny). Tranny sometimes shifts fairly firm from 1>2 at low throttle when cold, but acts fine otherwise.
Has anyone experienced a similar issue? What are some symptoms of an overfilled transmission? Underfilled transmission? Is there a better way to check the fluid level? I read a post on here where someone actually had the wrong dipstick, so I guess there are always other possible explanations. I will check the fluid later when the engine is cold and see if I still have an extremely high reading.
