I have a 96 Yukon that I bought almost two months ago and since day 1 the volt meter would fluctuate up and down all the time? If I left the dome light on for even 5 minutes the truck would be dead so I replaced both the battery and the alternator in the hopes the the volt meter would jump back up in the middle where it belongs and life would go on but it didn't. Over the past couple of days the battery light started flashing and every once and awhile the check engine light and abs lights would just flash? The other weird thing is that today on the highway going 70 the truck just died light someone unhooked the battery and then after about 3 seconds everything kicked back on? I drove right home and started to look a little further thinking it could be a ground issue but all of the grounds were tight and looked OK. I did find the battery cable that goes down to the starter laying against the exhaust manifold with the wire exposed and touching! I thought for sure that by wrapping the wire with electrical tape and moving it out of the way would solve the problem but it didn't? Please help me you guys!

If that main cable has seen major shorts several times, it is damaged. You need to replace that cable from the battery to the starter. After copper has been fried a few times, it looses it conductivity and has a rise in resistance.

The replacement should include the smaller cable that connects to the alternator. That would also eliminate the fusible link as part of the problem.

Look around for any other wires that show signs of over heating. Also the grounding wires would all have seen some stress. In all DC circuits, amperage is shared evenly between positive and negative. When the main cable was shorting, the negative side of the battery was sharing the same amperage, so check all grounds closely again. :)
