So I'm getting 2 12" Sundown SA 12s and am trying to figure out the best design for my box. I figure the box would be around 1.5-1.75 cubic feet per sub tuned at 34HZ... Now what would sound better/louder? The box raised a few inches and the subs/port facing down, or the subs mounted an angle facing up/rear towards the tailgate glass?

I'm hoping to get some good SQL out of this set-up

why would you put two sa's there? Get some subs built for smaller boxes, it will sound better

You box is too small. If you want SQL, you need different subs, or a bigger box. That box will be peaky as hell.

The SA12 is recommended for a 1.5 cu ft box @ 34hz and thats how much space i have. Why wouldn't it sound good?

Really? I can't imagine them recommending a box that small. At first I read 1.5 ft^3 for some reason, which would be terrible.

I would personally go with 2ft^3 before displacement, at 34Hz. Maybe even 2.2ft^3 before displacement. They may recommend a smaller box, but a larger box will have more SQ, play flatter, and be a bit louder in my experiences.

Size
Efficiency
SQ

Pick two out of the three. That's the general rule when building a box.

As long as you don't send them too much power, they'll be fine in a bigger box. Make sure the subsonic filter is set so they don't unload and beat themselves to pieces.

If you can't fit anything bigger that'll be decent, but if SQ is in mind I'd recommend trying to squeeze a bit more airspace out of the box.

I've got two 12" Kenwoods in a ported box facing the rear and it can get real loud. If you are looking for that distinct sub sound from inside and out of your car and that should do. The sound will bounce right off the hatch and back to the front. Plus they've got that nice look when you open the hatch!
