2004 tahoe says I need to change oil but it hasnt been 3000 miles or 3 months. I know I can drive much longer. Do I follow the trucks request or keep doing what ive been doing for the last 2 years? Sorry if theres a thread out there I looked and didnt see one.

You reset the light right?

You idle a lot?

The oil change monitor measures many parameters and driving characteristics.

You use synthetic or normal oil?

I would change it if it has been 3K on normal oil.

How many Miles on Synthetic Oil? I would imgine that the Truck does not recognize if one ist running regular or synthetic Oil.

How far down/how many % do you guys let your gage go? I usually change between 20 - 15% oil life left, which gives me approx. 5 to 6k miles on synthetic oil.

Does that seem right and ok?

I dont change my own oil. Thats one of my new years resolutions to do more things on my own. I wouldnt say I idle a lot. Theres about 160k miles on the truck. the place that services my oil has me on high mileage 5w 30 I believe its synthetic. This is my daily driver at least 40 miles to and from work. Im good about keeping a schedule and maintaining the vehicle but ive never seen anything like this.

I don't go by the light on any of my trucks.

I do 3K on normal and 5K on synthetic.

I do mixed driving. Hwy and City.

On highway alone you could go more.

It is my personal preference to change oil sooner than later. Oil is wayyyyy cheaper than a rebuild.

Also something to consider now is that GM under the certified program will NOT pay for a oil change less than 5K miles on Regular Oil.

honestly I never pay attention to that guage it usually stays the same. I go by the mileage or the date or the reading on the truck and usually thier im in sync. I dont have a problem changing the oil early but im not due for a change until the end of the month and I have about 700 miles to go and the warning came on a week ago.

I dont think it's the light. Lights on my dash make me paranoid!!! I handle those quickly!!! I had a 96 monte carlo that they always forgot to reset so I learned how to do it myself.

Im going to buy all the supplies and attempt my first oil change. I figure if I can modify the body I should be more in tune under the hood. My oil changes are expensive.
