I work in auto salvage and I see end-of-life vehicles and insurance wrecks. I grew up all GM but I keep an open mind now and have owned/driven multiple brands. None are perfect, GM cuts corners and has issues like anyone else but they seem to be more reliable than Ford and Dodge. GM's have problems but are more straight forward and cheaper to fix. OK your cluster is out, you can get it rebuilt cheap. Your AFM is acting up, well it's a small block pushrod V8, rebuild your valvetrain yourself, no special tools needed! GM computers are more reliable - which is shown by the fact that there's no market for used GM ECMs, BCMs, etc. They just don't have many problems with them.
GM interior quality sucks. They got -really- cheap with the GMT900s. Dashboards crack if you're in the south. Ford dashboards do NOT have many problems. Dodge dashboards are absolutely the worst, however. 94-97 awful, 98-01 the worst dash ever, 02-08 are ehhh. They use garbage leather compared to Ford and GM. I would say Ford has the best interiors.
That being said - GM trucks are ALWAYS in demand. Whatever the most recent two generations are, when wrecked examples come in to the yard, they are cleaned out. You are rarely going to see a 2007+ Silverado/Tahoe/Yukon etc in a self-service salvage yard, they stay on the road. But when one comes in, it's stripped to the frame. People like these trucks and want to keep them on the road. Look and see what people pay for used 100k mile+ ex-police Tahoes (PPVs), and those are 2wd typically!
Bottom line with GM vehicles is- they are getting better all the time, although they suffer from cheap materials, they have typically been easier to repair and parts--even from the dealer--are less than the competition.
