Tailgate glass pops open randomly.

Noticed something tonight when I was going to leave the house tonight. Besides the missing low beam bulb on the passenger's side and the blown low beam on the driver's side that is.

I made 3 videos because I can't edit them together on my phone. I saw the lights on the top rear were on very dim and seemed to be getting dimmer by the time I pulled my phone out. Sorry for the darkness in the videos.


The tailgate glass has been popping open randomly since I replaced the button in the license plate trim panel. It has even happened when I was backing up out of the garage as soon as I put it in reverse. Not sure what the cause could be yet.

Any ideas?

Update: 12:01am

Just ran outside to shut off the alarm and it shut itself off before I got out of the house. When I got to it, the rear top brake/running lights were on dim again but so was the right front park/turn signal bulb.

I disconnected the battery so it wouldn't do that again for tonight. Don't want to piss off the neighbors again.

Trace your wires- you have a short somewhere I bet....

So... I was poking around under the dash and found what looks to be a tracking device for a buy here/pay here type of place. Just a power and ground pulled from the OBD2 port. Disconnected that.


It looks like there used to be a trailer brake module that somebody took with them and left the wiring hanging by the pedals. If these loose wires are for something else, please let me know.


I think my problem is what I was assuming it to be. I pulled the BCM and found a melted spot in the case. Let me back up to yesterday.

I disconnected the battery after the alarm went off the night before. I drove it around yesterday. Everything seemed to be working. The remotes, the blinker noises, the door locks as far as I could tell. I drove it around until it got dark out doing various things and had to put in some new headlight bulbs finally. No random alarm or anything. It seems to be fine after disconnecting the battery for the night.

So I got the box out from under the dash and saw the melted spot. Took it apart and it looks like a transistor tried tp melt itself. If anybody knows what this pin controls that would be helpful info. Maybe this is a common issue waiting to happen or I could just be the lucky recipient of a bad previous owner. From the factory, there are four blunt cut wires to be used for a trailer brake controller. I can't see enough of the wires in that photo to be sure, but they may have never been used.

The pin you are asking about appears to be pin 1 of the X6 connector on the BCM. I don't have the 2007 electrical manual, but I pulled the below image from the 2011 version, which shows that pin to be... "not used."

Hmm... must just be a pin yhat lets the smoke out. I am glad that I haven't had the issue since the battery was unhooked overnight. Thanks for the diagram on the trailer harness. I will have to take a closer look to see where the loose wires come from.
