TCC Slip Speed Issue

Just thought I would post this up in case anyone has had this issue before and can help out.

The old lady's 04 Hoe started "sputtering" as she called it. I drove it to confirm it wasn't a figment of her imagination and there is definitely an issue. While accelerating from a stop sometimes the whole truck surges. Same thing if I'm on the freeway. No engine codes, no drivetrain codes, all fluids good.

Hooked up a friend's Modis scanner to it and the only thing we found out of the ordinary is that when the truck is surging the "TCC Slip Speed RPM" is jumping up to around 700 - 1K. When it isn't surging the same measurement is in the single digits.

Obviously the torque converter clutch is letting power slip when it isn't supposed to. I'm starting the research on the issue here/now. Let me know if you guys have come across this issue. :cheers:

I'm having the same problem and it's driving me crazy! I hope somebody has the answer and it's not an expensive issue.

After I did some research I realized the issue was most likely “Torque Converter Clutch Shudder.” I replaced the TCC Pulse Width Modulator, TCC Solenoid, and filter/fluid. I’ve had ZERO issues since I replaced these. I’m normally not a fan of throwing parts at problems, but with no DTC’s and little support from the service manual my decision was to spend the 80 bucks and give it a try before taking it to the dealer and having them look at it. I assumed they would have told me I needed a new torque converter and/or transmission rebuild.

Trans Filter/Gasket Kit ~ $28.00
TCC PWM ~ $15.00
TCC Solenoid ~ 13.00

Thanks I'm going to try and do this ASAP. Did you get the parts from the dealer or aftermarket?

Oil and filter from Napa. TCC PWM and solenoid from TransmissionPartsUSA. If I had to do it again I would probably get them from the dealer, but I needed the parts ASAP and the dealer wouldn't have gottent them in time. If you need the dealer part numbers let me know and I can look them up again.

Interesting. Explain more for me what the shutter is. Like is the tranny slipping???

It kind of feels like the tranny is slipping. If you pull off from a stop it feels like you took your foot off the gas and if you look at the DIC it says "traction active" so it's pretty much acting like the truck is spinning the tires and the traction control kicks in.

Cant there be an issues with the sensor on the hub bearing that allows this same thing to happen? It reads the wheel speed incorrectly, making the traction control system think there is a tire spinning, thus activating the system.

The wifes rig has had this going on for a while, and I would like to do a sure fix/repair without just "throwing parts" at it, if at all possible. It feels like it has nothing to do with the tranny, just the traction control.

I thought the same thing at first and I replaced both front hubs. A few weeks went by and I ran over a tree branch and it broke the wire on the right hub so I figured quick fix get a new sensor an I'm done but that wasn't the case so now I'm willing to try Skeletoy's solution and hopefully it works out.
