What if the mechanic was smarter than the dealership? The mechanic knows you are 1,000 miles from home and sees his chance at getting a nice used Tahoe cheap. He claims the engine is toast. He tells the dealership he will buy the Tahoe w/o a good engine if they take it on trade, says he will buy a used engine and put it in himself. It's possible the mechanic took it home and fixed whatever, the whatever not being a toasted engine.

I would have had it towed to another dealership and gotten a 2nd opinion.
