The Haynes manual describes a routine for checking or adjusting the timing on a 95. The 95 was still using the OBD-1.
They mention a tan wire with black stripe that is located under the dash, below the glove box. It needs to be disconnected to disable the EST system. (Electronic Spark Timing or vacuum advance for you old timers)
They suggest cleaning the harmonic balancer notch markings and the timing tab on the timing cover. It helps to mark the degrees timing mentioned on the label under the hood, with chalk or white paint, also the grove on the harmonic balancer, to be able to see it better with the timing light.
Check timing at normal operating temp with air conditioner off.
You will be able to advance it by turning the distributor. The 95 does not have a crank sensor, so the computer will not know the difference. Keep in mind that the computer will continue to use it’s “programmed” timing table, but will add your changes to that table. Keep track of how much you change it for future reference.
Don’t foget to re-hook the tan wire when done………….
Unfortunately the 95 was the last year before the Vortech change so it left the factory as a dog. I think the 96 had about 50 more HP than the 95.
