so this morning out of nowhere my transfer case started making a really bad noise, it sounds like a clunking/grinding noise, it didnt sound like anything was moving around in it or anything was loose, but it was bad enought that i didnt even wanna drive it, im hoping it is the transfer case and not the transmission, what confuses me is that it was literally out of nowhere, i havent had any signs of any problems, i drained the transfer case just now hoping that maybe it was low (it leaks a little) or that maybe there would be metal in the fluid, there was no metal at all, and maybe about a quart or so came out, im not sure how much is supposed to be in there though either, just wanted some feedback on this issue

thats kinda what i was thinking, does that just happen out of nowhere though? The other thing that confused me was that it still makes the noise if im coasting in neutral, if it was the sunshell would it make the noise all the time or only if its in gear?

What is the sunshell? Where is it located? I took my transfer case off of a 2000 Tahoe one time...just for reference I know where that is. :p

Also how much fluid should be in your transfer case?

Shouldn't it be more than a quart?

unknown at this time.
Yes it can happen suddenly. Reverse may start acting up to. At this point it needs to be shut down for good. You can replace just the sunshell but rrom your signature your tranny is oem but you have planes for a bbt and ht383e. So get it built up to handle the ht383e plus an extra 25% for the tune and other mods. that would cover the mods engine and 75% 100% reduction in torque management in the tune.

sunshell is in the transmission not transfer case. fill transfer case until it spills out of fill port above the drain port. Less then 3 quarts. 2000 model most likely uses Autotrac 2 fluid.

Okay, thanks.

Thats right I do remember that my transfer case took almost 3 or so litres of Autotrac ll fluid. This is a NP 246 transfer case I think. Little medal label tacked onto the side the transfer case.

The 1999 and older are similar aren't they? Requiring close the same amount of fluid.

Where does your transfer case leak from NOVA? Just curious to compare to mine when it did.

Clunking sounds are not fun, but I see you are getting some professional help in here, that's good!
