James, I didn't take a picture of the fluid that leaked out, but I had a paper towel below the fitting and it was I'd estimate 30% the intensity in color of ATF. Does anyone have a schematic of the radiator and transmission cooler? Is the cooler inside of the radiator? How does a new unit come - are these washer nuts already installed on the outside?

Here's a picture of my fitting, just for clarify.

The internal coolers that I've seen (not specifically GM) are either a brass or aluminum cylinder that's hollow in the middle (long doughnut shaped) and sits in the end tank of the radiator and is surrounded by the coolant.

Here's a couple pics I googled

GM uses the style on the left in your picture... just FYI.

Tom, that's a really good picture and very helpful for understanding. So the cooler is fully enclosed in the radiator and not replaceable/serviceable?
James, yes, I saw your schematic photo on page 1 of the thread - it appears there is an outside flange and internal threads attached to the outside of the radiator (forming the pressure boundary of the radiator). I don't see a hole or flow path from the radiator to the outside. Why would the cooler not be welded in (if it's not replaceable)? Is the male connector really forming the pressure boundary of the radiator?

I plan to flush my transmission tonight anyway (picking up the part you suggested) and the engine coolant system.

The radiator tanks are plastic so it can't be welded to the inner cooler.

Update:
The Hayden 397 adapter worked perfectly for hooking a clear tube up to the transmission cooler return. The horseshoe clip was a bit of a pain to get back on, FYI. I plan to get the Lisle 22930 3/8" Low Profile Disconnect for the future, as well as a spare clip (I spent about 45 min searching for it after dropping it trying to put it back on).
My coolant did not appear to have water in it that I could tell, so that's good news.
