Transmission gone... does this rebuild estimate seem fair?

What is your typical turn around for doing all that on a 4L60E? I could bring a transmission to you and kill time in LV during the wait time, depending.

If the Silverton is still in business, I liked that casino when I lived there for 9 months. Is attached at the Bass Pro Shop, or at least it was.
Personally I would just order a remanufactured Transmission and have my local shop swap it in or do it myself for a lot less money. Why would you waste $1,420.00 on a diagnosis for a 7 year old vehicles transmission? The dang thing is shot swap it out and move on.

Your response has nothing to do with my question. I have no transmission problem. I was just curious about the turn around time. I agree with your response, for the OP, not me. When and if I have transmission problems, ask anyone here, it will be taken care of asap.

4L60es typically take 2-3 days unless something has to be special ordered from out of state.

2016 Yukon XL SLT - 95k miles. 6l80 transmission - 2 nights ago felt like it was starting in 4th gear, kept changing gears on highway, clunky shifting. Took it to a local shop and was told the following:

We have thoroughly inspected your transmission. The valve body assembly (hydraulic cross leak) and the Torque Converter(overheating) are bad. The transmission has other internal failures; ie, burnt clutches and steels.

We can fix it. The first step is to remove, disassemble, and inspect the transmission. This labor equals $1,420.00.

The range the rebuild this six (6) speed transmission is from
$5,680.00 up to $6,350.00 + taxes

The inspection labor is included in the price range above.


Comes with lifetime warranty on internal mechanical parts.

Does this seem like a fair estimate? Transmission shop has 4.9 star rating with 500 reviews in Orlando, FL.

Also, anything I should try to have upgraded at this time?
The price looks fair to me. My bigger problem is the warranty. A warranty for the internal parts is not very valuable. The big money is the labor, not the parts.

Whoa, cheesy tactics charging for diagnostics on something you’re getting paid to disassemble and repair all the same.

I’m not sure this shop is capable of recovering from the fact they’ve just made a written attempt to fleece you. If taken to the governing body of Auto repair where you live they’d call it what it is: An attempt to contractually bind you to unneeded & unnecessary charges. If you sign that estimate and later let him begin work on the truck, you’re screwed. He’s gonna spring your 100k service on you AFTER he’s into the job and tack full retail parts, labor & MORE time on his estimate. You’ll have a $10k bill!

Let me fast forward. The trans rebuild on our 09 AWD Escalade ESV 6L80 last month was $6,670. $4k in labor, $2.6k in parts $2h tax. No tear down inspection, just a flat cost of $5k for all new trans parts & labor & new TC. The shop owner is a diesel tech and he, personally rebuilt the trans. I had 168k on the trans and knew it needed other maint done while it was apart. The labor would be free or at a 70-80% savings.

My Indi tech & I spent 45 min figuring what was needed. An additional $1.4k to the $5k trans repairs got a new pan gasket, oil pump O ring, oil & filter, rear main seal, fluid service on front & rear diffs, left & right front diff mount brackets & bushings, all 3 OEM hydraulic eng/trans mounts, shifter cable repair kit and poly sway bar, end link bushings, & exh mani gaskets.

If any of those things are spotted by your Indy do you think he’ll allow you to source the parts off RockAuto to save $3-$4h? Mine did. Local parts houses are scalping shops right now. It’s time for your 100k major service. Did he address that or that you can get $5k in parts and labor done for $1.5k while the trans is out?

Follow my lead and take it a step further. Go to R/A and put an order together for all those OEM parts for the motor but MOOG or similar for brackets & suspension. 2x check Amazon for a better price. Find a shop that’ll let you supply those parts for the trans service.

You’ll tackle your 100k major service almost for free and have another 100k+ left on the truck, PLUS, it’ll ride better than new with the new motor, trans, suspension & front diff bushings replaced. If you have 2WD take $5h - $1k off my estimates.

Shops will have varying rates depending on what they do to the trans, local market going rates for an overhaul as well as cost to R/R the unit to and from the vehicle.

That said, for that amount of money, I’d want to know exactly what they are doing/installing upon overhaul. It should include the following, in addition to stuff like filter, gaskets, seals, orings, sealing rings:

1. New frictions and steels - tell them you want Borg Warner or Raybestos high energy clutches and a new steel module for all clutch packs (consider a kolene pressure plate and steels for the 4-5-6 clutch pack)

2. New TEHCM, Internal Mode Switch, wiring harness and speed sensors - all must be OEM and Fast adaptive relearn performed

3. Sonnax Zip kit installed (has updated valves for the valve body and pump)

4. Pump completely overhauled (both working surfaces machined flat/true, pump rotor and slide-to-deck clearance set at .0015”)

5. 3-5-R drum re-welded at the base where it leaks to prevent recurrence

6. Sonnax 1-2-3-4 billet aluminum apply piston installed in place of factory piston

7. All brand new bonded steel and rubber pistons/piston dams

8. New OEM rear sprag clutch

9. New snap ring for the sprag assembly

10. New torque converter with .050” or thicker converter clutch - DO NOT let them give you an oem converter with the same POS .020” thick clutch as it fails repeatedly

11. Optional unless high peformance or heavy duty: Sonnax billet 4-5-6 clutch hub with Sonnax apply/dam piston kit to run an additional friction and steel in the 4-5-6 clutch pack. The OEM hub can snap in half under power

12. Cooler bypass delete kit or at least a lower temp thermostat so it runs cooler than stock

13. New, updated parking rod assembly (these were prone to failure and if that happens you lose the ability to put the vehicle into park)

Attached is the quote I received this morning, adding $500 for new Billet TC.

Attached is the quote I received this morning, adding $500 for new Billet TC.
Lol, “pump veins”….its “vanes” as in small metal plates not blood vessels…haha.

I don’t see a complete bushing kit on the invoice, only the pump body bushing. All bushings must be replaced in the 6L transmission family. Looks like they’re using the transgo stuff which is fine but their mark up is over 100% on those parts.

Im assuming they will inspect the parking rod assembly for rivet wear. 2018 is when GM finally fixed that problem.

What about the pump? Installing a new set of vanes (veins) is like putting a band aid on a gun shot wound. That thing needs resurfacing as well as rotor/slide pocket refacing and clearanced for the rotor and slide. And that assumes the TCC regulator and pressure regulator bores in the pump cover are not worn

What about the 3-5-r drum - are they going to reinforce the base welds to prevent future leaks/clutch burn up?

What about the 1-2-3-4 piston - will they reinstall the factory apply piston (big mistake if so though later units were less prone to failure than earlier ones)?

how thick is the converter clutch in the torque converter they will be providing?

Will they replace the snap ring that secures the rear sprag clutch assembly to the center support?

ETA: their initial invoice or write up was confusing as well,” we thoroughly inspected the transmission, found cross leaks) then “tear down and inspection is $1400+”

How did they thoroughly inspect the transmission before tearing it down?

What DTC codes were stored?

I have a transmission issue on my 1995 GMC Yukon 6.5L 4x4 2 door with 243k logged. I plan to replace it with a "remanufactured" 4L80E trans to eliminate any future trans issues. Scotty on YouTube warns against "trusting" any shop to rebuild your transmission. The go to source for a "reman" transmission is Jasper. The quote I received from Andy at Jasper this past Saturday afternoon (I was amazed they were open on a wknd.) was $3,676.00 plus a $800 deposit on the core and another $150 deposit on the flat that the piece is shipped on. Warranty for 3 years or 100K Jasper has their own trucks that will deliver to one of their existing network of installers. Important to note is this "reman" transmission has 16 different upgrades from the factory version from 1995. I live in south Florida where they have many, many approved installers. Called 3 in my area and got labor time at 9.5 hours at 165.00 an hour equals $1815.00 installed. Call Andy at 800 827 7455 x 10853.
He spent 45 minutes or more explaining to me why I should seriously consider their product. As an aside, my local shop that I have used since since owning my Yukon says they use Jasper in Florida State Police engine rebuilds and have for many years. Hope this helps. PS. Warranty only applies if you replace the trans. cooler as the fluid would be contaminated if you did not.
