I have a 2003 yukon xl with the 4l60e transmission. When I was towing my trailer with my rzr on it up a hill my rpms topped out and I could only go 40 mph. I pulled over to let it cool down. After about a hour I tried to go again and it would only go about 40 mph and seemed to be stuck in first or second gear. Has anyone had this issue and if so what might be the fix. Hopefully I don't need a new trans.

Need some more information. Was it in 1st or 2nd gear when the RPMs started going higher than they should be at normally? On the second try was it level ground?
The possibilities, You were "in 2nd gear" but it wasnt there. More specifically your 2-4 band could be burnt up and is needed to get 2nd gear. Anything from a solenoid, 2-4 servo cut oring to 2nd gear valve stuck in valve body. You could have been in 2nd gear but 3rd gear wasnt there then the valve body comes into play for 3rd gear.
Stop revving it up to get it to move. All its doing is burning up your clutches. The damage may very well already be done which could require a total rebuild. Whats your fluid look like? Pink or brownish-orange? I bet it smells burnt.
At this point you are probably going to have to take it to a tranny shop. Transmission almost never fix themselves and heal overnight. Unfortunately.

I had the same issue happen to my 03. Bad news. Mine is going in for a rebuild. It was whining out in 2nd, wouldn't shift, and the fluid is brownish.

Thank you for your response. I found that my 3-4 packs where burnt. It's in the shop for a rebuild with heavier duty clutches and torque converter. They are building it to give me more torque and bigger trans cooler!

Just curious what did you pay for rebuild or did you do it yourself?
