in trying to keep up with maintenance, i was thinking about doing a transmission flush on my truck. i don't know if the previous owner had ever had it done. no problems as of now, rides nice & shifts smooth (has 138k). i though i read somewhere on here that transmissions should not be flushed in these trucks. but when i searched (transmission flush), only one thread came back and that made reference to someone that had problems.

i don't have any problems, but was thinking about getting it done for maintenance. any feedback?

Is the fluid on the dipstick nice and red? If so i would do a flush but don`t get it done at a quick lube type of place.

Use this method explained here http://www.truckmodcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4699

I just did it to my yukon and it`s a great way to change all the fluid without stirring up all the junk that`s in the pan.

But if the fluid is brown and nasty i`d just leave it alone. It may or may not cause any problems but i`ve seen it happen where a flush was done on a high mile transmission and it wasn`t able to drive off the lift afterward. It`s not worth the risk.

I did the fluid change as described in the link, but didn't change the filter. My fluid has always been nice and clean, so I decided to just change the fluid. I also couldn't get the fitting out of the radiator, and I was afraid to try too hard and break the radiator. So I just pulled the little clip and removed the line to the radiator, then got some bigger tubing and clamped it over the existing fitting. it worked just fine. Very easy to do. I did it at 100k and switched to the synthetic fluid. It's been 20k miles and it's still running just fine.

Don't ever do a flush.

You risk ruining your transmission if done by a tech who is sloppy or doesn't properly perform the service.

I have a friend who is a GM mechanic and he also recommends against a flush. It will stir up the sediment that has naturally settled in the transmission from the wearing of the bands. That stuff settles in the pan and you don't want to stir that up. You also might create problems with some of your solenoids and check balls in the valve body not seating correctly afterward.

Instead do a fluid exchange. What I ususally do it replace the trans pan with one that has a drain bolt. Then every other oil change drain the trans pan and replace the fluid. You'll keep fresh fluid in it after a few changes.

What you'd spend on a flush will buy you a new trans pan and quite a bit of trans fluid.

interesting. have any info on a link to a trans pan with a drain bolt?

Look on ebay for a 4L60E deep trans pan. I'd be surprised if you had the shallow pan design. They're cheap, I bought a chrome pan for $20 shipped. It wasn't great quality as everything is cheap Chinese made nowadays but did the job.

You can find them all the way to $200+ if you get an aluminum pan with cooling fins/tubes but they aren't necessary as you should have an external cooling system on your trucks.

I'd stay away from the kits you get at the parts stores where you drill a hole in your pan and put a hollow bolt through it, those tend to leak. You also have to be careful where you decide to place the drain bolt on those as you could find out it interferes with the valvebody and you can't get it back on afterward.

If you get a new pan then change the filter in the trans since you're going through the trouble of dropping the pan, make sure you get the correct filter as there are two different models, one for deep and one for shallow pans. And make sure you get the old filter seal out, they sometimes pull off the filter and get stuck in the valvebody.

I'll never understand why GM never built a drainplug into the trans pan as standard, most imports seem to have them.

GM also did away with the drain plug in the differential on most models I beleive. With my Trailblazer it had a diff drain plug in 02, but I heard lost it in 03 or so.

firestone says they don't do flushes, it's a transmission service. the fluid is not forced out like in a flush. think i should still stay away?
