Well, today did not go as planned! Went out into the country in the morning where my children's classmate set up shop with a lift. Once we got it on the lift, the only leak was the block gasket for the oil cooler. Easy fix.
But let me tell you about what happened before that! Well, the youngsters woke up and were late. They called and I was already out there so I headed off road to exercise the transfer case and differential in 4Hi and 4LO. About 12 miles out in the boonies they called and said their truck broke down on the off-ramp and was blocking traffic. Told them that I was on my way and to send me a pin, which they did. Took a while to get onto pavement but soon did and zig zagged through the back roads to get to them as quickly as possible.
As I pulled up there was a policeman blocking traffic, he held up the cars so I could pull the Yukon in front and get set up. My hook and shackle and tow strap and such are kept in the back. In a minute we were ready to pull, the policeman blocked the road in both directions and I pulled the 7,100 pound Dodge Ram up onto the bridge and off the road. Then we let traffic pass and thin out. The policeman shook our hands and wished us well.
Then I told the Dodge driver to hop back in and I'd tow him the 15 miles to the shop out in the boonies. Off we went and the Yukon didn't care, barely noticed with those 3.73s and E85. Transmission temps hit the 180s only when I was going slow to let traffic pass but was otherwise in the 170s most of the time. Truck stayed in 3rd gear, the last time I towed on E85 she did this, but was fine. Put the truck in 4HI when we went off road and pulled the last 1/4 mile through the dirt to the shop.
To keep tension on the strap, I had the driver slow us down whenever we needed to. All week I've been procrastinating on whether or not to buy a kinetic energy rope for towing, there's been one sitting in a shopping cart since last Monday. Should I buy it tomorrow or will I never need one again? LOL
Airbag light came on while bouncing around off-road. Will check it tomorrow. In 5 days we've pumped 68 gallons of fuel. Back on 93 for a planned tow this week, about 9,500 pounds.
